Biotechnology supplies company Amersham Pharmacia Biotech is
hunting for its first internal communications manager and is about to
sign up a PR agency.
Amersham Pharmacia Biotech was formed last year from a merger between
Amersham Life Science and Pharmacia Biotech. The restructuring of the
merged company led to a review of in-house and agency activity. The
company has 3,600 employees based in Sweden, the UK, the US and Japan,
with global sales of around pounds 425 million. Fifty-five per cent of
the company is owned by Nycomed Amersham and 45 per cent by Pharmacia
and Upjohn. Nycomed Amersham was established by the merger between
UK-based Amersham and Norwegian Nycomed, which also took place last
The internal communications manager will design the company’s internal
communications structure from scratch. The appointee will report to
corporate affairs director Nicola Smith, who joined the company last
December and was formerly head of corporate affairs for the diversified
industrial group Staveley Industries.
Smith said that the creation of the new post showed top level commitment
to building strong internal communications. ’We’re not just paying
lip-service,’ she said.
’The challenge of the job is that we are a global organisation and there
are different national cultures involved,’ said Smith.
Smith’s current team includes a corporate communications manager and a
project assistants. She is looking for a second project assistant and
administrative support. Smith is also about to hire an agency for
corporate and product communications. She would not name the agency.
Public affairs is managed in-house, and the Item Group produces the
employee magazine and handles some internal communications projects.
The company also has three internal sales and marketing networks based
in Europe, the US and Asia/Pacific.
