DIARY: Waiters left dog dazed by an afternoon of Longman

Key Communications consultant David Longman has the sort of face that confuses people. During a recent sojourn in Leeds, Longman inadvertently convinced staff and diners in a Chinese restaurant that he was secretary of state for education and employment David Blunkett. The restaurant turned out to be one of Blunkett’s hang-outs and the waitress kept asking clear sighted Longman where his dog was.

Key Communications consultant David Longman has the sort of face

that confuses people. During a recent sojourn in Leeds, Longman

inadvertently convinced staff and diners in a Chinese restaurant that he

was secretary of state for education and employment David Blunkett. The

restaurant turned out to be one of Blunkett’s hang-outs and the waitress

kept asking clear sighted Longman where his dog was.

Longman’s uncanny resemblance could well be put to more devious

uses.

Politically he sits on the other side of the fence to Blunkett and has

confused a few people around Whitehall when he attends Conservative

planning meetings. Some people are now convinced that they have seen

Blunkett in league with the opposition.

Colleagues at Key have suggested that Longman put his name forward for

the post of head of news which is currently vacant in Blunkett’s

office.

However, Longman says that shadowing Blunkett could make things a trifle

confusing for the media.

It seems that Longman is something of a chameleon. In his younger days

he apparently resembled the piano-playing comic Richard Stilgoe. ’I had

to sign his autograph for a holidaying couple on a beach in Cornwall,’

admits Longman.
