The Daily Telegraph’s new editor Charles Moore has made his first senior
appointment by poaching the Evening Standard’s associate editor, Sarah
Sands, to be his number two at the paper.
Sands, who was effectively number three on the Evening Standard, becomes
deputy editor on the Daily Telegraph.
She replaces Veronica Wadley who resigned on Friday. Wadley was on leave
this week and, according to Telegraph sources, is not expected to return
to the paper. No reason was given for her resignation.
Sands, who has worked on the Evening Standard for over nine years, said
she will not be joining the Daily Telegraph until the end of December
when current Evening Standard editor Stewart Steven retires.
She was planning to meet with Moore on Monday night to discuss future
plans for the newspaper.
Sands edited the Londoner’s Diary and worked as features editor during
her time at the Standard. Her editorial strengths are in comment, and
news features.
Moore moved from his editor’s office at the Sunday Telegraph to the
Telegraph on Tuesday.
He is being replaced on the Sunday Telegraph by Spectator editor Dominic
Lawson. Lawson, in turn, is being succeeded by the deputy editor of the
Sunday Telegraph, Frank Johnson.
