NEWS: Younger departs British Gas for IR role at Glaxo

Glaxo Wellcome, the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world, has

named Jennie Younger as its new director of investor relations as part

of a rejig of its financial communications.

Younger, who has been head of investor relations at British Gas for the

last three-and-a-half years, joins the company this autumn with

responsibility for managing relations with its institutional

shareholders and financial analysts around the world.

Based in London with two other support staff, she will report to Glaxo

Wellcome’s finance director John Coombe. Her role will not include

managing relations with the financial media, which continues to be

handled by the firm’s public affairs department under its corporate

communications director Geoffrey Potter.

Younger’s appointment ends an extensive trawl by management headhunters

for suitable candidates for the job among agency and in-house staff

which began earlier this year (PR Week 31 May).

The search itself was prompted by the retirement later this year of

Penny Burnett, Glaxo Wellcome’s current investor relations director

based in New York. Although Burnett will be replaced in the US, the new

postholder there will report to Younger in the UK.

Younger had been in line to become head of investor relations at Transco

after the demerger of British Gas next year.

Shares in Glaxo Wellcome rose this week after a trial showed that

treatments including one of its HIV drugs stalled the progression of

Aids among patients.
