Sony Computer Entertainment UK, which produces and markets the Sony
PlayStation games console and games, has appointed Carey Bayley as PR
and promotions manager.
Bayley, who reports to Sony Computer Entertainment’s marketing director
Alan Welsman, is its most senior PR professional and takes charge of a
team of three. Since his promotion last year, from head of PR to his new
post, Welsman has overseen the PR function.
Prior to joining Sony, Bayley worked as a freelance consultant.
Previously she worked as head of PR and promotions at Travel TV and
marketing and promotions manager at Planet 24 where she helped to launch
the Big Breakfast.
Bayley said: ’My role is to help maintain PlayStation’s healthy position
in the market. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I intend to be
here for some time.’
Last autumn Welsman changed Sony PlayStation’s PR arrangements after its
pounds 100,000 account was resigned by MacLaurin Communications. It now
uses agencies on a project basis for the launch of specific games.
Bayley has no plans to change this arrangement and is currently seeking
agencies for the launch later this year of Tekken 3, Spiro the Dragon
Sony has no imminent plans to launch new consoles but is developing a
range of game controllers for launch later this year.
Sony Computer Entertainment launched PlayStation in 1995 and sold 1.1
million PlayStations last year. Around two million consoles have been
sold in total in the UK. Main rival Nintendo sold 650,000 consoles over
a period of nine months last year.
