Takki Sulaiman joins later this month from his role as head of comms at CAFCASS, replacing Alex Louis who holds an interim role.
Sulaiman has formerly worked as head of comms at Stonham and chief operating officer at Hansard Communications. One of the issues with which Sulaiman will be expected to deal is criticism from Archant-owned newspaper East London Advertiser over the council's magazine East End Life, which the paper claims is putting it out of business.
Last September, Tower Hamlets hit out at reports that an extra £400,000 of taxpayers' money may be needed to fund East End Life.
'Despite recent reports to the contrary, the cost of East End Life has not gone up and remains at 2.3 pence per copy,' said deputy leader Joshua Peck.
'The £396,000 overspend relates to the entire comms budget at Tower Hamlets - and is a mid-year projection of where we would be at year end if no action were taken.'
In the same month, Tower Hamlets appointed Golley Slater to 'strengthen civic pride and community involvement'.
