FA Cup champion Chelsea Football Club has hired two music industry

PR people to take it off the back pages and generate front page coverage

by making it ’sexy’.

Creation Records director of press Andy Saunders and Garry Blackburn,

who run TV and radio promotions company Anglo Plugging, are dedicated

Chelsea fans who approached club chairman Ken Bates with a plan to

overhaul its public relations operation.

Saunders and Blackburn’s first paid task will be this week’s launch of

the club’s Megastore, which will be the UK’s largest football club

merchandising outlet.

’We are going to be selling the idea of Chelsea and the brand and making

it sexy,’ said Saunders.

So devoted are the pair, that they agreed to handle the launch of

Chelsea Radio 1494AM, and an internet site in February for free. Bates

subsequently hired them on a consultancy basis.

The club is enjoying something of a renaissance both on the field (under

player/manager Ruud Gullit) and off, with the opening of the new South

Stand, the launch of Chelsea holiday village and a new state-of-the-art

ticketing office this year. Chelsea will continue to work with Fleet

Communications for its financial PR and PR connection for the holiday

village.
