FA Cup champion Chelsea Football Club has hired two music industry
PR people to take it off the back pages and generate front page coverage
by making it ’sexy’.
Creation Records director of press Andy Saunders and Garry Blackburn,
who run TV and radio promotions company Anglo Plugging, are dedicated
Chelsea fans who approached club chairman Ken Bates with a plan to
overhaul its public relations operation.
Saunders and Blackburn’s first paid task will be this week’s launch of
the club’s Megastore, which will be the UK’s largest football club
’We are going to be selling the idea of Chelsea and the brand and making
it sexy,’ said Saunders.
So devoted are the pair, that they agreed to handle the launch of
Chelsea Radio 1494AM, and an internet site in February for free. Bates
subsequently hired them on a consultancy basis.
The club is enjoying something of a renaissance both on the field (under
player/manager Ruud Gullit) and off, with the opening of the new South
Stand, the launch of Chelsea holiday village and a new state-of-the-art
ticketing office this year. Chelsea will continue to work with Fleet
