The financial agency was brought in without a pitch process as the story broke over the weekend in the Sunday Times and on Sky News. FD is retained by the Coventry.

On Monday the pair confirmed merger talks were ongoing, but that there was no certainty that the discussions would lead to a merger. The tie-up ‘would only proceed if it were to the benefit of both sets of members,' the Coventry said in a statement.

Hogarth chairman Chris Matthews, MD Rachel Hirst and director Lucinda Kemeny are working on the account.

In December 2009 Hogarth advised the Chelsea Building Society during its merger with the Yorkshire Building Society.
