As Jack’s giant felt about Englishmen so traditionally, have sports
writers felt about PR folk.
But there are signs that the hard men of hacking have stopped eating PR
people for breakfast. For journalists’ body, the Sports Writers’
Association of Great Britain, has signed up PR consultancy, Howard
Harding Associates. A signing that, agency principal Harding says, felt
like the ‘ultimate accolade’.
Ian Cole, SWA chairman and Daily Express staffer, says the association
hired the agency to help it find a new sponsor and to expand beyond its
‘Fleet Street sports hacks image’.
He adds that the SWA decided: ‘to use professionals to help us attract
more of the growing number of journalists, broadcasters and
photographers who work in sport, both regionally and nationally’.
Was that the sound of a beanstalk falling?
