The group of financiers, called the Red Knights, want to take control of the football club from the club's controversial owners, the Glazer family.
Sky News reported last night that Finsbury, the City PR firm, has been lined up to advise the Red Knights, although no formal appointment has yet been made.
Finsbury has a history of working with the club itself after it provided advice during its sale in 2005.
The talks follow a protest by the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) at the weekend. MUST used the final of the Carling Cup to protest against the Glazers by handing out green and gold scarves and releasing 30,000 coloured balloons.
Finsbury could not be reached for comment.
