McGarahan has become interim group corporate comms director, to oversee the creation of a centralised global PR strategy and function for the FTSE 250 business. He will also lead the search to find a permanent group corporate comms director.

He was hired following a strategic comms audit he conducted of the firm’s corporate and financial PR, internal comms, brand and CSR activities in December. The company operates under the brand name RS Components in 27 countries.

‘The company has set itself some stretching business goals which are focused on international growth and enhancing the RS brand around the world,’ said McGarahan.

‘In creating this new global PR strategy and structure, the group is now determined to grow the corporate reputation of the business and build on the already credible brand equity it enjoys globally,' he added.

Electrocomponents’ retained financial PR agency Tulcan PR will not be affected by the review.

Meanwhile McGarahan will continue to work with waste management group Shanks to handle PR for the potential £600m bid from US private equity firm The Carlyle Group.

McGarahan has previously worked with Equitable Life, AXA and led the PR surrounding the bank nationalisation of Bradford & Bingley.
