Kevin Johnston, formerly public relations manager for Heathrow

Airport’s Terminal five, has left to head UK PR for United Airlines.

Johnston will report to Andy Plews, general manager, media relations;

Graham Atkinson, vice-president for United’s Atlantic division and to

the company’s UK general manager, a position which is currently

vacant.

Johnston will handle media relations, working closely with United’s

communications staff in its European offices. He takes over from Plews,

who held the post for eight years before being promoted last month to

handle global communications from United’s Chicago headquarters.

Plews said: ’PR has been a vital part of United Airlines’ success in the

UK since we started flying there in 1991. We need a strong communicator

to carry that on - someone who will communicate with the business

traveller.’

Johnston joined Heath-row’s communications operation in 1995 and handled

PR surrounding the public inquiry into building a fifth terminal. He was

previously senior press and PR officer at the Royal National Institute

for the Blind, where he worked for five-and-a-half years.

United Airlines does not use any external PR support in the UK. It

retains Fleishman-Hillard in the US.
