James Odling-Smee has left Hackney Council, where he was deputy

head of communications, to join research and information body the Local

Government Information Unit (LGIU) as its new head of

communications.

Odling-Smee will report to the unit’s director, Dennis Reed, and oversee

a two-strong team covering internal and external communications. He

replaces Alan Pickstock, who had held the post since the Local

Government Information Unit was founded nine years ago and left to join

public affairs consultancy the Policy Information Network last

month.

Odling-Smee worked at Hackney Council for four years, joining as

communications officer before being promoted to deputy head of

communications last year.

He was previously a journalist specialising in the voluntary sector and

arts management.

The Local Government Information Unit is committed to reinvigorating

local democracy. It has 139 local authority and trade union members and

provides independent advice, information and training. It also lobbies

on local government issues, including the white paper on local

government which will be published later this year and is expected to

include measures to encourage participation in council elections.
