Tesco’s planning executive Bill Hamilton has quit his job after just three months to become Safeway’s first director of public affairs.

Tesco’s planning executive Bill Hamilton has quit his job after just

three months to become Safeway’s first director of public affairs.

Hamilton left Tesco last week and will join Safeway in six weeks time

with a brief to tackle government issues including safety, the

environment and planning controls.

The new role, believed to carry a salary of around pounds 70,000, is one

of several created by the supermarket in a bid to sharpen its

communications function.

Hamilton joined Tesco in March after a 15-month stint as head of

campaigns and communications at the Manufacturing, Science and Finance

union (PR Week, 8 March).

At Safeway he will report to the company’s director of communications

Kevin Hawkins and head a team of three public affairs managers.

Hamilton will work alongside the supermarket’s director of corporate

affairs Teresa Wickham.

Hawkins has also hired Ken Hunter as internal communications manager and

is poised to announce the appointment of a PR manager for Scotland.

He said Hamilton’s appointment is the result of the fact that the food

retail sector is becoming subject to increased government and EU

legislation.
