Bell takes PR director role to raise VSO profile

UK-based development charity Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has appointed Matthew Bell to the new post of communications director.

UK-based development charity Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has

appointed Matthew Bell to the new post of communications director.

Bell, currently appeals manager at fellow charity Community Service

Volunteers, joins following a restructure of VSO’s communication

function. He reports to director David Green and becomes a member of

senior management, overseeing 40 people.

His remit includes: changing public perceptions of the developing world;

press and publicity; publications; recruitment information, working with

employers to make it possible for employees to volunteer; and liaising

with local groups in the UK to ensure the transition of volunteers

returning from overseas.

Green said: ’Matthew Bell’s role will be to take VSO’s historically low

profile and turn it around. We need more people in the UK to be aware of

what we do now, not what we did 40 years ago.’

Earlier this year, VSO split its communications and new services

department into two separate divisions. The new services division, now

headed up by director Brian Rockcliffe, handles research and development

of new volunteering initiatives.

Bell worked at Community Service Volunteers for 18 months, during which

time he managed national fundraising campaigns and generated media

coverage of volunteering schemes.
