Capital Radio has chosen Consolidated Communications to promote its

FM and AM stations in London and the regions, for an initial six-month

contract.

The account is part of the bid to raise Capital’s profile as competition

in the radio world hots up. According to figures from Radio Joint

Audience Research for the final quarter of 1997, Capital Radio had a

23.1 per cent listening share in its broadcast regions. Capital FM

broadcasts in London, the Midlands, and the South.

Consolidated will focus on providing support for 95.8 Capital FM’s

programmes and key DJ personalities, as well as developing long-term

media and commercial partnerships for the station.

The agency will report to Capital Radio Group managing director Sally

Oldham and head of corporate communications Elly Smith, who joined the

radio station from Virgin Radio last June (PR Week, 27 June 1997).

Smith’s responsibilities include the company’s two London radio

stations, Capital 95.8 FM and Capital Gold, its web sites and the

Capital Cafe.

Capital FM attracts three million listeners every week and features DJ

Chris Tarrant’s breakfast show. Tarrant’s personal publicity continues

to be handled by the MacLaurin Group and Finsbury continues to handle

financial PR for Capital.

Capital Gold, the AM station, is due to roll out in Hampshire, Sussex,

Kent and Birmingham over the year.
