Capital Radio has chosen Consolidated Communications to promote its
FM and AM stations in London and the regions, for an initial six-month
The account is part of the bid to raise Capital’s profile as competition
in the radio world hots up. According to figures from Radio Joint
Audience Research for the final quarter of 1997, Capital Radio had a
23.1 per cent listening share in its broadcast regions. Capital FM
broadcasts in London, the Midlands, and the South.
Consolidated will focus on providing support for 95.8 Capital FM’s
programmes and key DJ personalities, as well as developing long-term
media and commercial partnerships for the station.
The agency will report to Capital Radio Group managing director Sally
Oldham and head of corporate communications Elly Smith, who joined the
radio station from Virgin Radio last June (PR Week, 27 June 1997).
Smith’s responsibilities include the company’s two London radio
stations, Capital 95.8 FM and Capital Gold, its web sites and the
Capital FM attracts three million listeners every week and features DJ
Chris Tarrant’s breakfast show. Tarrant’s personal publicity continues
to be handled by the MacLaurin Group and Finsbury continues to handle
financial PR for Capital.
Capital Gold, the AM station, is due to roll out in Hampshire, Sussex,
Kent and Birmingham over the year.
