Boots Healthcare International, which sells over-the-counter

medicines including Nurofen and Strepsils, has created a new PR position

to handle the brands’ image on a global basis.

Sharon Buckle, formerly group public relations manager with Boots The

Chemist has been made international PR and professional relations

manager with a remit to co-ordinate roster agencies and to develop links

with ’recommenders’ such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

Buckle will work alongside brand teams in managing PR agencies including

Maureen Cropper Communications, Keene Communications and Welbeck in the

UK, ACH in Spain, Mavellia in Italy and Burson-Marsteller in France. She

reports to head of PR Ian Wright, who will now concentrate on corporate

strategy.

Buckle, 37, has been group PR manager since 1994 and was responsible for

launching the Boots Herbal, Homeopathic and Aromatherapy complementary

medicine ranges. She has also been a principal spokesperson for the

Community Pharmacy Action Group which opposes moves to end resale price

maintenance.

The over-the-counter self-medication market is worth pounds 8 billion in

Europe alone. BHI operates in 120 countries employing more than 2,000

people and spends pounds 4 million on PR for its brands each year.
