Public affairs consultancy GPC Connect has hired Steve Barwick, the

former Parliamentary adviser to President of the Board of Trade Margaret

Beckett, in one of the more senior post-election appointments.

A pivotal figure in Beckett’s team in Opposition since 1994, Barwick

acted as adviser and media officer to Beckett while she was shadow

Health Secretary and subsequently shadow Trade and Industry

Secretary.

Prior to 1994 he worked for Dawn Primarolo MP, now a Treasury minister

and Alice Mahon MP, now PPS to Chris Smith MP.

Barwick joined the agency last week, but says he had been talking to GPC

for some time before Labour’s landslide victory. ’I was attracted to

GPC’s mix of profit and non-profit clients which is in tune with New

Labour,’ he said.

He will focus on trade and industry issues affecting both commercial and

non-profit organisations and unions, including the Competition Bill, the

Low Pay Commission and proposed legislation on late payments for small

businesses.

The agency is also talking to a number of other former front bench

advisers and party workers looking to move into the commercial world

following the election.

- AS Biss and Co has hired Tim Payton, a former researcher for former

shadow Sports and Tourism Minister Tom Pendry MP. The move reunites

Payton, who has been closely involved in the development of Labour’s

tourism and hospitality and sports policy, with Labour’s former head of

corporate relations Nicki Lewis, who joined Biss in January.
