He joins the company next month and will report to senior vice-president for global communications Duncan Learmouth.
Hodges joins GSK from the International Business Leaders Forum where he has worked since 1997, most recently as managing director.
Hodges had responsibility at IBLF for organisational strategy and engagement with corporate members. He also managed programmes linking together business, NGOs and the public sector to promote economic and social development in emerging markets.
Prior to IBLF, Hodges headed communications at ethical retailer The Body Shop International.
Learmouth said: ‘Adrian brings broad experience to the company including multiple external perspectives on integrating corporate responsibility into the business. He will play a pivotal role in continuing to build GSK's relationship with society as we seek to be more open, more flexible and more transparent in how we operate our business.'
Hodges' appointment follows a major shake-up of GSK's global media team, which PRWeek revealed last month. The changes included the appointment of Home Secretary Alan Johnson's special adviser Jo Revill as director of media for global product and pipeline news.
