Channel 5 Broadcasting, winner of the licence for Britain’s fifth
terrestrial TV channel, has drafted in Liz Roberts, formerly head of
press and publicity at BSkyB, as its acting head of PR.
A decision on a more permanent appointment will not be made until a
marketing director has been appointed, according to the office of
Channel 5’s chief executive Ian Ritchie.
Roberts, who left BSkyB in February after two years, was previously with
Roy Addison PR. Addison, who is now director of communications for
Pearson Television, helped the Channel 5 Broadcasting consortium, which
includes Pearson and MAI, in the lead up to the licence being awarded.
Addison is understood to have recommended that Channel 5 hire someone on
a temporary basis until the post can be filled permanently, to allow him
to concentrate on his heavy commitments with Pearson Television.
Both Roberts and Addison are currently on holiday and unavailable to
comment. Channel 5 saw off an attempt by Virgin Television to have its
licence award overturned when the High Court refused a judicial review
in January. The channel is expected to launch in early 1997.
