Barclays has handed the PR for all its personal banking to Harrison

Cowley in a contract industry sources estimate to be worth over pounds

250,000 in fees.

The Birmingham office of Harrison Cowley pitched against three unnamed

heavyweight London agencies to win the business last week.

It is planning to use all eight of its regional offices in the campaign

which covers Barclays Connect, Barclaycard debit cards and Barclaycall,

its telephone banking system.

Barclays is keen to communicate the improvements it has made to its

current account facility, such as reducing overdraft rates, to its eight

million account holders.

The campaign will also reach potential new customers through a national

and local media programme.

Hall Harrison will liaise with Barclays’ personal banking unit in

Coventry and the London-based public relations department of Barclays UK

Banking Services.

The agency had been working on an eight-month project for Barclays debit

and Connect cards. Barclays head of UK Banking Services PR Nick Cobban

refused to name the agency which had previously handled Barclaycall.

‘It makes sense to have a single agency working for personal banking,’

said Cobban.

‘Our debit card has not been promoted particularly strongly in the last

few years,’ he added.

* Barclays has retained Paragon to handle its Small Business Services PR

account following a six-way pitch. The agency has held the account for

five years.
