The PRCA has chosen Adrian Wheeler, managing director of GCI Group,

to succeed Jackie Elliot as chairman when her term of office ends in

May.

Barry Leggetter, former managing director ofFleishman-Hillard UK, was

originally elected as Elliot’s successor, but his resignation from F-H

in October forced him to relinquish his chairmanship (PR Week, 3 October

1997). Leggetter has yet to find work with a consultancy and is

therefore disqualified from holding the PRCA position.

Wheeler has been chairman of the PRCA’s marketing committee since May

1996. He has been heavily involved in marketing and managing the PRCA’s

referral system, PReview, which puts potential clients in touch with

agencies.

He helped to introduce the new PR Effectiveness Awards scheme. Wheeler’s

stint as chairman will last two years.

One of his main tasks will be to oversee the introduction of the PRCA’s

standards initiative, in which members will be assessed professionally

and financially by independent examiners (PR Week, 9 January 1997).

’The PRCA has made huge strides forward in recent years, with 27 new

members in 1997,’ said Wheeler.

’The introduction of the standards gives the PRCA a platform to push

further professionalisation.’
