Scottish buy out for Westminster Comms
Westminster Communications has bought out Citigate, its joint venture
partner in Edinburgh-based lobbying firm Scottish and Westminster.
Meanwhile account director Craig Harrow, who currently heads the office,
is leaving to join Asda. Westminster Communications is expected to
announce new appointments within the next few weeks.
Air Miles invites pitches in PR review
Air Miles, the British Airways subsidiary, is reviewing its PR. The
company, which has used Handel Communications for its trade PR for the
last five years and The Public Relations Business for its consumer PR
since October 1994, is known to have invited at least two agencies to
pitch for a consumer and business-to-business contract.
Water work for Lowe Bell Financial
French companies General Utilities and Saur Water have hired Lowe Bell
Financial to represent them in their bid for Mid Kent Water. Financial
Dynamics previously handled the account together with Westminster
Strategy, which continues to lobby on their behalf. Shandwick is
handling the defence of Mid Kent Water.
Greaves heads new Sussex authority
Liza Greaves has been appointed head of communications and PR for the
new unitary authority of Brighton and Hove. She previously worked for
Brighton, Harlow and Haringey councils.
Eight agencies bid for EC’s TACIS contract
Eight PR agencies have submitted tenders for the European Commission’s
2.2 million ecu TACIS programme. Aimed at encouraging economic reform
and democratisation in the former Soviet Union, the account has been
with The Rowland Company for three years.
Hanson hires Cardew to handle demerger
Industrial conglomerate Hanson has appointed Cardew and Company to
handle the third and final stage of its demerger - the formation of The
Energy Group. The PR campaign, worth an estimated pounds 150,000, will
begin in earnest next month in preparation for a stock market flotation
New project for East Midland’s Akers
East Midlands Electricity’s corporate relations manager Nick Akers has
moved to the firm’s marketing department to assist with a 12-month
project. Media relations manager Julian Evans will temporarily take over
his role. The company is currently being bid for by Dominion Resources
of the US.
Owens leaves radio for own comms shop
Mike Owen, operational director of Capital Radio subsidiary Birmingham
Broadcasting, has resigned to set up his own communications business.
Birmingham Broadcast owns two local stations: 1152 XTRA and 96.4FM BRMB.
Overseas volunteers sought by Raleigh
Youth development charity Raleigh International is looking for two
volunteer press officers to work on four month assignments next year.
The first, starting in January, is in Chile. The second is in Malaysia

Fila gives CMT a sporting chance
Fila, the sportswear company, has taken on CMT International to execute
a UK consumer and trade programme involving sponsorship, links with
fashion colleges and Internet promotions. The hiring is part of a 1997
pounds 2 million UK marketing spend.
