Flack: (Saving) on Expenses - Canteen, London, SE1

Reviewer Jo Jamieson, director, Berkeley PR

- What is it good for?

Canteen is perfect for lunch or afternoon tea for a meeting that has the potential to stretch into the evening. This particular branch is a quiet oasis on the bustling South Bank, situated at the back of the Royal Festival Hall.

- Signature dishes

I would recommend anything from tea and cake (I can particularly recommend the chocolate and beetroot cake and scones), to a full roast - with fishfinger sandwiches, Welsh rarebit or a bowl of sausage rolls in between. And there's a lovely looking Neal's Yard cheese board that I will be trying next time.

- Who's the boss?

Annie Pires is the general assistant manager at this branch of Canteen.

- Tips please?

When it's warm enough, the seated area outside is a pleasant place to watch the world go by. If you fancy roast chicken, you can actually choose whether to have 'leg and thigh', or 'wing and breast'. I'm more of a leg girl myself.

- What's the damage?

Cake from £2.50-£3.50. Main courses are £9-£14.
