Opinion: From our Readers - Pressure must be intensified on NLA

The NLA's decision to suspend billing for the receipt or forwarding of weblinks (prweek.com, 7 January) is welcome, and was certainly an auspicious start to the New Year.

While it's right we celebrate their climb-down, we need to recognise that it is only the first round in what promises to be a long fight.

The NLA has performed this U-turn not because it has suddenly undergone some great change of heart, but because it has been subjected to a great deal of pressure.

We need to keep applying that pressure. In fact, we need to intensify it.

With that in mind, the PRCA is currently studying Meltwater's submission to the Copyright Tribunal, in order to see how we can best support them in stopping this ridiculous attempt to tax information.

Unfortunately, common sense, kind words and good intentions do not seem to work with the NLA - only forceful action.

Francis Ingham, director-general, PRCA.
