Abbey National is on the hunt for a head of corporate

communications to replace Jane Ageros, who is to join US investment bank

Merrill Lynch.

Ageros’ appointment as director of marketing and communications at the

bank ends a five month search for a successor to Richard Spiegelberg,

who became head of communications for Merrill Lynch’s international

private banking arm in September.

Starting in May on an estimated salary of pounds 150,000 Ageros will

take charge of an in-house team of around ten staff.

She will take overall responsibility for media relations, public

affairs, internal communications, advertising and corporate hospitality

across Merrill Lynch’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

She will report to UK chief operating officer Costas Michaelides and

worldwide PR and marketing heads Jim Wiggins and Charlie Mangano in New

York.

At Abbey National Ageros heads a much larger department of 70 staff,

including six managers who report to her. Media relations, corporate

literature and videos, events management, customer relations,

shareholder communications and the chairman’s private office all fall

under her remit. She reports to deputy chief executive Charles

Toner.

Ageros said that Abbey National had briefed headhunters to scour the

agency and in-house markets for a suitable successor but that it would

also consider candidates from within the company.

’We are looking across the field at different industries, agencies and

internally,’ she said. ’We want someone really hot for the job.’
