Two PR agencies have been fighting for the hearts of Manchester’s
Christmas shoppers. The Arndale Centre has called on local agency Spin
Media to fight off competition from the Trafford Centre, which employs
City Press PR.
Spin Media has organised two events to woo shoppers. On 12 November
Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs turned on the Christmas lights
at the Arndale Centre and on 15 November Simply Red singer Mick
Hucknall, also a Spin client, turned on the Christmas lights for
Manchester city centre.
Meanwhile City Press PR, which has organised a 36-foot, singing
Christmas tree for the Trafford Centre, deny any suggestion of a pitched
According to account director Paul O’Farrell, most visitors to the
centre are not from Manchester. O’Farrell has noticed ’a tribe of
anoraks who tour the country visiting large shopping centres’.
Perhaps there are some customers worth losing to the Trafford Centre.
