Consolidated Communications has recruited the services of an
ex-Tory MP to boost the Parliamentary knowledge of its staff and
Sir John Gorst will be retained by the agency to advise clients and
staff on a broad range of political and EU issues.
The move continues a trend for non-public affairs consultancies to
appoint an in-house adviser on Parliamentary and lobbying matters.
Hi-tech specialist the Weber Group has just recruited a public affairs
director (see story, below).
Sir John was the rebel backbench MP for Hendon North for 27 years and
has sat on various select committees including Employment and National
He caused a stir in December last year when he resigned the Conservative
Party whip after a dispute with the then health secretary Stephen
Dorrell over funding for a hospital in Sir John’s constituency.
Sir John started his career in public relations and set up his own
consultancy in the 1960s. Commenting on his new role he said: ’I am
hoping to resurrect my activities, and it’ll make a refreshing and fun
change to the 27 years I spent in the House.’
Consolidated’s managing director Alastair Gornall said this move was a
response to ’a growing number of clients looking for advice on
’Sir John will work with us to formulate a strategy for them and advise
on campaign implementation.’ In some cases this may mean recommending a
specialist lobbying agency.
Sir John will also be working with Consolidated staff to educate them in
the workings of Westminster and the EU, Gornall said.
