Charles Barker creative director Steve Gebbett was recently given
the task of launching new client Essex Furniture’s sofa hotline, which
customers can use to order a settee over the phone.
To generate media coverage, Gebbett advised Essex to build the world’s
longest sofa for a press launch. A few days later a 42ft-long recliner
appeared in London with Essex Furniture proclaiming it the world’s
longest in a bid to qualify for the Guinness Book of Records.
Things threatened to turn nasty though when a rival sofa firm,
Shrewsbury-based Express Furniture claimed to have constructed a 47ft
The situation has developed into a fully fledged war of the sofas with
Gebbett heroically defending his client’s furniture: ’Our sofa qualifies
for the Guinness record because it’s a single structural design. There
was an article in the Shrewsbury Chronicle which said their settee was
41ft. They strapped a bit extra on overnight. Anybody can do that.’
Gebbett is confident that his client’s sofa will be ratified as the
world’s longest in due course. In the meantime he’s offering you lucky
readers first chance to bid for the giant sofa which Essex Furniture is
selling off for charity. Any offers?
