The General Council of the Bar, the professional body for

barristers, is to review its government and media relations account,

which carries annual fees of pounds 120,000, before deciding whether to

retender it.

Westminster Strategy has held the account for the past ten years. The

current three-year contract was renewed in 1995 after a repitch.

WS’s five-person team dedicated to the Bar Council is headed up by

managing director Michael Burrell and associate director Jane

Cooper.

David Hamilton-Rump, head of administration and public affairs secretary

at the Bar Council, said: ’We are not absolutely committed to

retendering, and any review wouldn’t necessarily be provoked by

dissatisfaction.’

In the event of a retender, Shandwick is expected to pitch for the Bar

Council account. Jon McLeod, a director at Shandwick and former

consultant at WS until last year, worked extensively on the account from

1994 to 1997.
