Chester City Council is seeking its first head of communications

after consolidating its press and PR, marketing, graphics and

reprographics divisions into a single corporate communications

department.

The new post holder will report to the council’s management board which

includes chief executive Paul Durham and three senior directors.

The corporate communications department will have a budget of pounds

500,000 a year and at the moment is staffed by a team of 24 people.

However the council expects to recruit two more media and public

relations officers.

Chester decided to create the new department after a communications

audit carried out by PR agency DTW.

It was felt that bringing communications services into one division

would cut costs by creating a more efficient structure. ’We felt we were

spending more money than we needed to on communications,’ said senior

policy officer Sid Jones.
