The Department of Trade and Industry has ended its search for a

director of communications with the appointment of DTI policy maker

Stephen Sklaroff.

Sklaroff, who currently works on issues such as spending policy in the

DTI’s finance directorate, replaces Jean Caines who announced last year

that she would retire early. He will take over on 2 March.

Sklaroff inherits a communications department of around 60 people who

staff the press office and produce information material.

’It’s too early to talk about changes,’ he said. ’Jean will be a hard

act to follow and I’ve got a great deal to learn. The communications

department’s responsibility is very wide and there is a great deal of

interaction between policy makers and the communications staff.’

Sklaroff, 39, has a detailed knowledge of the operations of the DTI,

where he has been for five years. He also brings a wide range of

knowledge of industry sectors to the job.

Having started his career with several policy jobs at the former

Department of Energy, Sklaroff then moved to the British Embassy in

Washington as First Secretary for Energy and then the environment. He

later worked at the embassy on telecommunications policy.
