Julia Hobsbawm, founder of Hobsbawm Macaulay Communications, has been hired to give strategic PR advice to the Independent’s newly-appointed editor Rosie Boycott.

Julia Hobsbawm, founder of Hobsbawm Macaulay Communications, has

been hired to give strategic PR advice to the Independent’s

newly-appointed editor Rosie Boycott.

Boycott, editor of the Independent on Sunday, took over the seven-day

operation at the end of January following Andrew Marr’s departure.

Hobsbawm has been retained by Independent’s parent company, Newspaper

Publishing, which is part-owned by the Mirror Group.

Hobsbawm already works for former Independent editor Ian Hargreaves -

now editor of the New Statesman. She will help Boycott devise a

communications plan for the newspaper. Hobsbawm will talk to journalists

to identify current and upcoming work which can be promoted. ’I have a

roving creative brief,’ she said. She will not act as a

spokesperson.

The Independent’s PR is handled by the Mirror Group’s four-strong

corporate communications team, headed by corporate communications

director Kirsty Macmaster.

The group has retained Charles Barker since the Independent’s relaunch

last year.
