Saunders leaves United News and Media for Cardew and Co

Richard Saunders, former director of development and communications at United News and Media, has joined Cardew and Company as a director.

Richard Saunders, former director of development and communications

at United News and Media, has joined Cardew and Company as a

director.

United has been a client of Cardew and Company for two years and

Saunders will work on the account at the agency.

Saunders, 45, will receive an undisclosed proportion of equity in the

agency. He was appointed by Lord Hollick, head of media and financial

group MAI in July 1995. MAI became United News in April 1996 following a

merger.

Previously, Saunders had spent 15 years at the Treasury where he rose to

become press secretary to then Chancellor Norman Lamont.

He was subsequently made head of the Treasury’s private finance

unit.

’We’ve been adding substantial amounts of new business and Richard’s

appointment represents a large strengthening of the team,’ said Anthony

Cardew, chairman of Cardew and Company.

Saunders said: ’It’s not very often you get an opportunity to come and

work for an organisation as impressive as this one. My personal

portfolio has yet to settle down but I wouldn’t want to restrict myself

to media clients.’

Cardew and Co has recently handled the demerger of tobacco giant

Gallaher and four electricity merger bids. It has also promoted account

manager Jon Simmons to the post of associate director. He joined in 1995

from Barnfather Associates.
