Shell International is expanding its external affairs department even

further with the appoinment of two new advisers.

Andrew Whyte, previously deputy director of corporate affairs at News

International, joined the oil giant on Monday this week. He will be

joined from 2 September by Michael McGarry who will also act as an

adviser. Both will report to Shell International’s head of external

affairs Karen de Segundo.

Their recruitment, which brings the total number of external affairs

staff to nine, comes just a week after it was revealed that Price

Waterhouse’s head of media relations Mike Hogan is to join the company

as de Segundo’s number two in August (PR Week, 12 July).

Late last month Shell International hired Tom Henderson, former vice

president, corporate affairs at Waste Management International, as a

project manager.

Shell International’s head of media relations Eric Nickson declined to

comment on suggestions that Shell International was beefing up its

communications resources in order to cope with increasing criticisms of

its operations in Nigeria.
