Director of comms Diana Tickell said the children’s charity wanted to show how Barnardo’s makes a difference as well as raising awareness of the reality of the issues with which it works.

‘Research shows that this is the biggest challenge for us – people do not understand fully what we do, so it’s vital that we communicate this to gain support,' she said.

The ad is part of a wider campaign called Turning Children’s Lives Around, which will include an interactive poster being put up on Tottenham Court Road on 14 December.

Barnardo’s has set up an online debating forum for young people. It will culminate in ‘The Teens Speech’, a Christmas Day message from the UK’s youth, streamed on MySpace’s front page.

The charity also kicked off its pre-election political activity yesterday. It is lobbying the three MPs in charge of the various manifestos to ask them to prioritise support for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
