Gareth Thompson’s secret is out. The seemingly dedicated managing

director of Hunt Thompson PR is, it seems, desperate to get out of the

public relations industry and become a journalist. Or is he?

Thompson was recently amazed to receive a letter from Radio City in

Liverpool informing him of his failure to get a place on EMAP’s graduate

training scheme. Despite the excellent quality of the 3,000 applications

submitted, the letter continued, Thompson had not managed to make the

grade.

Thompson, who, at 33, would make a rather mature graduate trainee, says:

‘I must be having a mid-career crisis showing itself in all the wrong

ways,’ he says. ‘Maybe we sent them a press release they didn’t like and

they sent that letter to wound my pride.’

Radio City managing director Lynne Wood is at a loss to explain the mix-

up.

‘I just can’t get to the bottom of it,’ she says. ‘I wish he would get

in touch. I’m worried that we might have missed out on some important

business.’
