Diary: Ogilvy UK director reveals the tale of a not so social climber

On the subject of mountains again. Ogilvy PR’s UK managing director

Lyle Closs last month spent three weeks in the sub-zero temperatures of

Greenland. It seems that he is a keen mountaineer and decided to tackle

Greenland’s five highest peaks in one trip.

All five peaks are between 3,000 and 4,000 metres high and Closs and his

team had to face temperatures of as low as minus 35 degrees C. However,

Closs triumphed in adversity and even managed to climb the highest peak,

Gunnbjorn-sfjeld. He tells me: ’It was the first Australian ascent of

the five mountains in Greenland which are also the highest in the Arctic

circle.’

Heroic Closs is no stranger to danger though. Previously he has scaled

25,000 feet of the K2 in the Himalayas without oxygen and climbed other

mountains in the Arctic and Antartica. He tells me that he fancies

another expedition soon but adds: ’I don’t think my family are as keen.’
