The Consumers’ Association, publisher of Which?, has hired its first

heads of public affairs and PR in an effort to sharpen its image as a

campaigning body.

Sally McCrombie, currently parliamentary officer at the Water Services

Association, will join the organisation next month to head an expanded

public affairs team.

The department has increased from six to ten staff with each executive

now specialising in individual areas such as health, personal finance

and public utilities.

The association’s first head of public relations, Nicola Holgate from

the French construction business Saur UK, will also join in June.

According to Steve Harris, communications director at the Consumers’

Association, Holgate’s brief is to turn the association’s press office

into a more strategic PR division.

‘We are trying to update the Consumers’ Association,’ Harris told PR

Week.

‘There is a high awareness of Which? and our independence, but the link

to the work we carry out on behalf of all consumers has been weak,’ he

said.

The association has also recruited Rachael Kenningham as European public

affairs officer and Jackie Cravely as press office manager.

Harris said the new communications structure will allow the Consumers’

Association to spend time campaigning on single issues rather than

having to shadow the campaigns covered by Which?.
