It seems that the launch of David Michie’s book the Invisible
Persuaders (PR Week, 27 March) has caused quite a stir in the national
media but has failed to impress many within the PR world itself.
On the days surrounding the book’s launch last Thursday Michie was
inundated with press interest, conducting interviews with Steve Wright
for his Saturday morning radio show and Sky News. Articles were also
scheduled to appear in the Times and Independent.
However, Michie is not relying solely on such widespread exposure. He
personally scrawled between 400 and 500 postcards to communications
professionals who either appear in the book or work at companies of
people who feature.
’To those I mentioned in the book I scribbled ’you’re in it’ to those
who aren’t I wrote ’they’re in it, are you?’’ Michie tells me.
However, the postcards baffled many. One City PR man who received a
postcard from Michie called the Diary to ask ’Who is this guy writing to
me, I’ve never heard of him?’
It seems that Michie’s publicist at publisher Bantam Press was in the
dark over Michie’s own little PR stunt. And since the cards went out
she’s been the one left to fend calls from curious PR types.
