Worldcom International, which agreed a dollars 37 billion merger
with fellow US telecommunications group MCI in November, has hired
Luther Pendragon as its first PR agency in the UK.
The agency will run a press office for Worldcom and position it as a
telecoms supplier in the UK. Luther Pendragon, which will only represent
Worldcom, not MCI, is understood to have won the account in a three-way
pitch against MMD and Fox Parrack Fox, its incumbent advertising
Worldcom employs 700 staff in the UK and is the third largest carrier of
international business communications, according to a study by telecoms
Its clients are mainly banks and multinationals, for whom it supplies
telephone and data lines and internal networks. Worldcom also carries
information for internet service providers.
Worldcom has five corporate communications staff in the UK, led by head
of corporate communications Mark Weeks. The merger has yet to be cleared
by European regulators, but the company’s corporate communications team
will represent MCI in the UK once this happens.
At the time it was announced, Worldcom’s merger with MCI was the biggest
to date. It has since been dwarfed by the dollars 140 billion merger
announced by Travellers Group and Citicorp.
