Worldcom International, which agreed a dollars 37 billion merger

with fellow US telecommunications group MCI in November, has hired

Luther Pendragon as its first PR agency in the UK.

The agency will run a press office for Worldcom and position it as a

telecoms supplier in the UK. Luther Pendragon, which will only represent

Worldcom, not MCI, is understood to have won the account in a three-way

pitch against MMD and Fox Parrack Fox, its incumbent advertising

agency.

Worldcom employs 700 staff in the UK and is the third largest carrier of

international business communications, according to a study by telecoms

regulator Oftel.

Its clients are mainly banks and multinationals, for whom it supplies

telephone and data lines and internal networks. Worldcom also carries

information for internet service providers.

Worldcom has five corporate communications staff in the UK, led by head

of corporate communications Mark Weeks. The merger has yet to be cleared

by European regulators, but the company’s corporate communications team

will represent MCI in the UK once this happens.

At the time it was announced, Worldcom’s merger with MCI was the biggest

to date. It has since been dwarfed by the dollars 140 billion merger

announced by Travellers Group and Citicorp.
