Ken Clarke and his Europhile colleagues in the Tory party may be in
a minority but they have a powerful ally in the shape of comedian Eddie
Izzard.
Better known for his interest in womens clothing than his politics,
Izzard is injecting a bit of showbiz glamour into the pro-Europe
European Movement.
The first fruits of this celebrity alliance emerged last week when
Izzard sent out an e-mail petition calling for democratic elections for
the leadership of Europe, more open government and a Bill of Individual
Rights. He intends to present this at the EU summit in Amsterdam on 15
June.
’It’s very much a personal manifesto from him’, says EM’s David
Vigar.
’It’s all part of making sure people feel they’ve got something to show
for being in Europe’.
Great ... but what’s Eddie going to wear?
