Detergent giant Lever Brothers has elevated corporate affairs to

the boardroom for the first time with the appointment of a new corporate

and consumer affairs director.

Lever Brothers sales director John Ballington takes up the post in July,

in a move which signifies the growing importance to Lever of managing

corporate responsibilities.

Ballington’s current board position as sales director is to be absorbed

within the newly-created customer development director role which is to

be filled by Graeme Miller.

Ballington will be responsible for managing Lever’s relationships with

key stakeholders, including politicians, environmental groups, trade

associations, the media, and other opinion-formers. He will also

continue to develop consumer advice services.

The new board appointments are part of the company’s drive to adopt a

more customer-focused approach. Other new appointments include John

Trafford as marketing director and Jerry Wright as senior corporate

strategist for Unilever.

Lever Brothers’ chairman Aart Weijburg said: ’We have regrouped at Board

level to reflect the changes in our business and the way our customers

need to work.

’And at the same time we are accelerating our corporate and consumer

affairs activity.’
