S4C, the Welsh language television channel, has promoted Iona Jones

to be its first director of corporate affairs.

Jones took up the new role last week after 18 months as head of

corporate development. That post involved lobbying and public affairs

work for S4C on issues ranging from the 1996 Broadcasting Act to

securing EU funds for minority language programming. More recently her

work has focused on promoting S4C’s bid for a digital terrestrial TV

licence.

In her new role, Jones assumes additional responsibility for press and

corporate PR and the issues surrounding the marketing of S4C’s

programmes and services. She continues to report to chief executive Huw

Jones.

Jones said that she would try to build S4C’s commercial identity beyond

Wales and increase awareness of its English language productions and

areas of expertise such as animation. S4C is also negotiating a deal

with Astra satellite operator SES to beam programmes to the UK and

northern Europe.

’We need to have a corporate image in the UK and abroad which is more

meaningful to people outside Wales,’ she said. ’We have a wide output

and shouldn’t be pigeon-holed.’

Earlier this month S4C submitted a proposal to run a seven channel

digital TV multiplex through its subsidiary S4C Digital Networks.
