Barclays hands Unicorn to Skidmore

Barclays Bank has handed the reins of the PR operation at its unit trust division, Barclays Unicorn, previously part of retail banking, to its financial services PR manager Di Skidmore.

Barclays Bank has handed the reins of the PR operation at its unit

trust division, Barclays Unicorn, previously part of retail banking, to

its financial services PR manager Di Skidmore.

Skidmore, who has the new title of head of PR and internal

communications, joined Unicorn on 3 February from the retail operation.

At retail, known as ’UK banking services’, she was number two to Nick

Cobban who heads the 11-strong team there.

It is the first time Unicorn has had a dedicated person to handle PR and

internal communications. Previously, Skidmore handled these areas for

Unicorn at the same time as her various retail duties.

Her appointment comes as Unicorn is beginning to bed down after becoming

part of a three-business Barclays division - Barclays Assets Management

Group. This consists of Unicorn, Barclays Global Investors, and Barclay

Trust.

Barclays Global Investors was formed last January after the merger of

BZW Investment Management and the Wells Fargo-Nikko investment

group.

It currently has no dedicated internal PR support, and Skidmore did not

dismiss the possibility that she could also eventually take on that

role.

The three businesses in the division have different external PR support,

with Lansons looking after Unicorn, Lowe Bell holding the Global

Investors brief, and Luther Pendragon handling Barclay Trust.

On building a team at Unicorn, Skidmore, who reports to the group’s

director of corporate communications Elizabeth Wade, said: ’At the

moment I am on my own with just a very good secretary, but I’m also

plugged into the marketing and communications departments. Initially I

will be using existing resources, but ultimately I will be recruiting in

the future.’
