Barclays Bank has handed the reins of the PR operation at its unit
trust division, Barclays Unicorn, previously part of retail banking, to
its financial services PR manager Di Skidmore.
Skidmore, who has the new title of head of PR and internal
communications, joined Unicorn on 3 February from the retail operation.
At retail, known as ’UK banking services’, she was number two to Nick
Cobban who heads the 11-strong team there.
It is the first time Unicorn has had a dedicated person to handle PR and
internal communications. Previously, Skidmore handled these areas for
Unicorn at the same time as her various retail duties.
Her appointment comes as Unicorn is beginning to bed down after becoming
part of a three-business Barclays division - Barclays Assets Management
Group. This consists of Unicorn, Barclays Global Investors, and Barclay
Barclays Global Investors was formed last January after the merger of
BZW Investment Management and the Wells Fargo-Nikko investment
It currently has no dedicated internal PR support, and Skidmore did not
dismiss the possibility that she could also eventually take on that
The three businesses in the division have different external PR support,
with Lansons looking after Unicorn, Lowe Bell holding the Global
Investors brief, and Luther Pendragon handling Barclay Trust.
On building a team at Unicorn, Skidmore, who reports to the group’s
director of corporate communications Elizabeth Wade, said: ’At the
moment I am on my own with just a very good secretary, but I’m also
plugged into the marketing and communications departments. Initially I
will be using existing resources, but ultimately I will be recruiting in
