Merrill Lynch, the US investment bank is understood to be on the

verge of appointing a new communications head - rumoured to be the

female head of PR from another bank.

The role fell vacant last year when director of marketing and

communications Richard Spiegelberg became head of communications for

Merrill Lynch’s international private banking (PR Week, 20 September

1996).

In the meantime it has appointed Richard Silverman to the new role of

media relations manager. Silverman, who was head of media relations for

Merrill Lynch’s capital markets business in New York for three years,

joined the London office last week.

He takes charge of media relations for all Merrill Lynch activities in

its Europe, Middle East and Africa region. These include investment

banking, debt operations, equity sales, trading and research. Silverman

will work with one other deputy and report to Spiegelberg’s successor,

when appointed.
