The Queen would certainly not have been amused. Seven of the world’s
best-selling female authors gathered in New York to provide Diana,
Princess of Wales with ideas for the future. Ostensibly publicising a
new American TV channel producing a diet of romantic films 24 hours a
day, the gathering generated UK coverage mainly on the strength of
Jackie Collins’ contribution that to gain revenge on the Royal Family,
Diana should ‘go bi and move a female lover into Kensington Palace’. The
Daily Telegraph watered this suggestion down to ‘closeting herself in
her palace with female friends’ while the Express bottled out
completely and said Collins suggested ‘an older richer man’.
The Daily Star omitted any mention of the Romance Channel or the other
more sympathetic suggestions: ‘Diana needs gay fling says queen of
steamy novels’. The Times carried a piece outlining all the authors’
proprosals while the Sunday Times titled them ‘the most mean-spirited
and tasteless women on earth’.
