Macmaster takes corporate view at Mirror

Mirror Group plc has hired Kirsty Macmaster, a founding partner of

investor relations firm Frew Macmaster, as its first director of

corporate communications.

She will report to chief executive David Montgomery.

The appointment comes at a time when the tabloids are under attack

following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and when the Press

Complaints Commission is undertaking an urgent review of its code of

practice. Macmaster started work on Monday, two days after Earl

Spencer’s blistering criticism of the media at the funeral.

She will handle external and internal communications, government and

regulatory affairs. ’There has been no corporate PR function at Mirror

Group before and the events of the last week or so show how important

this is,’ she said.

Macmaster, 36, has been putting over the group’s corporate line on

intrusion and tabloid journalism this week.

Previously, Mirror Group’s seven main titles in London and Scotland

carried out their own PR on an ad hoc basis. ’From now on’, she said,

’we will agree policy with David Montgomery, and requests for external

PR will come through to me to ensure that we have the corporate

view.’

Macmaster set up Frew Macmaster in 1990 with Anita Frew. Mirror Group

was a client, as was ad agency Abbott Mead Vickers which acquired a

controlling interest in the agency in 1994. Macmaster sold her 25 per

cent stake to AMV last November.
