Mirror Group plc has hired Kirsty Macmaster, a founding partner of
investor relations firm Frew Macmaster, as its first director of
She will report to chief executive David Montgomery.
The appointment comes at a time when the tabloids are under attack
following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and when the Press
Complaints Commission is undertaking an urgent review of its code of
practice. Macmaster started work on Monday, two days after Earl
Spencer’s blistering criticism of the media at the funeral.
She will handle external and internal communications, government and
regulatory affairs. ’There has been no corporate PR function at Mirror
Group before and the events of the last week or so show how important
this is,’ she said.
Macmaster, 36, has been putting over the group’s corporate line on
intrusion and tabloid journalism this week.
Previously, Mirror Group’s seven main titles in London and Scotland
carried out their own PR on an ad hoc basis. ’From now on’, she said,
’we will agree policy with David Montgomery, and requests for external
PR will come through to me to ensure that we have the corporate
Macmaster set up Frew Macmaster in 1990 with Anita Frew. Mirror Group
was a client, as was ad agency Abbott Mead Vickers which acquired a
controlling interest in the agency in 1994. Macmaster sold her 25 per
cent stake to AMV last November.
