DIARY: Was Cliff’s racket at Wimbledon just a PR stunt?

Sir Cliff’s impromptu Wimbledon singalong last week delighted fans and press alike, although apparently it was not quite as impromptu as they imagined.

Sir Cliff’s impromptu Wimbledon singalong last week delighted fans and

press alike, although apparently it was not quite as impromptu as they

imagined.

The more cynical among you will detect the hand of PR japester Mark

Borkowski - currently busy promoting Cliff’s new musical Heathcliff.

Borkowski plays down his involvement. ‘We thought there might be an

opportunity to do something during a rain-break,’ he tells me, ‘we put

up two or three ideas’. But when the chance arose, it was Cliff’s

decision to grab it, he adds.

Wimbledon’s PR agency bridles at any suggestion that it was suckered by

one of its own kind. ‘I can assure you it was not prearranged,’ says

Philippa Haslegrave of Lowe Bell Good Relations.

So was it just a strange coincidence that Cliff’s co-star Helen Hobson

dropped by to entertain the ticket queue the following morning?
