the tunes of I will survive and The only way is up.

Meanwhile, across town, APCO UK was celebrating its first birthday in

Westminster College Gardens.

At one stage the press corp nearly outnumbered MPs but there was still a

respectable group of politicos willing to toast the prospect of a

massive pay rise. Among them were Michael Portillo, Geoffrey Howe,

Douglas Hurd, Tony Newton and Nicholas Soames along withBill Morris and

the Lord Mayor of Westminster.

Other guests included Mercury’s svelte-looking marketing director Simon

Esberger, who attributed his new look to supporting his wife on her

latest diet. Some support - she lost seven pounds while he shed one and

a half stone.

Statistics for the night? Four hundred guests, ‘several hundred’ bottles

of champagne drunk and no arrests - at least inside the ground.
